Literacy

In Literacy, the children are immersed in a range of texts and have the opportunity to explore and discuss them before they begin their writing. Regular demonstration and modelling of writing helps to encourage a high quality of work to include many of our writing objectives. Children are encouraged to independently include previously taught objectives in their writing by using resources without being prompted.

Whole class read

In our whole class reading sessions, children experience a wide range of challenging texts. We read the text as a whole class and answer a range of different type of questions e.g. inferring character feelings. retrieval of facts, summary of text etc.

Spellings

In Year 3, we learn and practise new spelling rules and patterns daily. Additional support is given to those children who struggle with spelling in small intervention groups when needed.

Maths

In Maths, the children are taught a range of skills in number, calculations, shape, measures and data handling with a range of question types including problem solving.  Children use apparatus and equipment to support them in their work when needed. We aim for the children to be rapid at recalling the 3, 4 and 8 tables by the end of Year 3.  Children can use Timestables Rockstars to improve their rapid recall.

Foundation Subjects

During the afternoons, lessons are taught through creative theme work merging national curriculum objectives from different subjects such as History, Geography, Art, DT, Music, RE and Science. Please see our medium term plan to look at what we are learning about each term so you understand what we are talking about when we come home!

We are learning about the Stone Age during the Spring term and will visit Burwardsley Outdoor Education Centre on a class trip. The day will consist of the following:

  • a visit to a replica iron age roundhouse, searching for artefacts in the archaeological dig
  • clay pot/string making
  • a comparison of Iron Age/Stone Age artefacts
  • looking at Stone Age bows and arrows

Homework

We are currently following a new Times Tables Fluency Programme from Number Sense in which the children learn through the repetition of facts being gradually introduced over time. The children are enjoying this programme and their confidence is really growing. Please ask your child what new facts they are learning this week and encourage them to continue to practise the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables three times a week at home.

We ask that you practise the spellings from the Year 3/4 spelling list (which can be found in the back of the chldren's planners) 3 times a week. They can also revisit the Year 1/2 spellings too.

Please read regularly with your child too (at least three times a week).
