PSHE / RSE – Personal, Social and Health Education / Relationships and Sex Education

Intent

At Penketh South, we believe that PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We strive to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, by tackling many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. In an ever–changing world, we believe that it is important that they are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that our children have good mental health and well-being.

Implementation

At Key Stage 1 and 2, PSHE is taught through a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. We ensure we cover the Health and Well-Being, Relationships and Living in the Wider World Learning Opportunities set out in the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study, which comprehensively cover the statutory Health Education and Relationships Education guidance The PSHE Association scheme states that: ‘PSHE education addresses both pupils’ current experiences and preparation for their future. The Programme of Study therefore provides a spiral curriculum to develop knowledge, skills and attributes, where prior learning is revisited, reinforced and extended year on year.’ We have attached this below for you to see the key skills and knowledge that we teach. We have swapped the Spring and Summer planning to fit in with our school themes. The programme of study integrates ‘Relationships and Sex Education’ (SRE) during the Spring term for our school under ‘Growing and changing’. Alongside PSHE Association planning, we use a number of other schemes as resources to enhance lessons and learning opportunities for our children:
  • We use books reccommendd by the ‘No Outsiders’ scheme that we feel further cement values such as inclusivity, tolerance and a respect for themselves and others.
  • We use ‘KidSafe’, an age appropriate safeguarding programme that teaches children the knowledge that they need to stay safe.
  • We have access to ‘Life Savers’ resources, which equips children with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to manage money well.
  • We have weekly ‘My Happy Mind’ sessions that are dedicated to bulding resilience, self-esteem and positive wellbeing. Please use the link below to log onto ‘My Happy Mind’ and access materials to use at home or to use as an insight to our sessions in class.

Impact

In order to be confident in the impact of PSHE across the school, the PSHE leader will monitor the subject through; discussion with pupils, the evidence of lesson activities, displays and through ongoing discussion with colleagues. Pupil voice taken place this school year has found that our children clearly enjoy PSHE lessons and are very enthusiastic when talking about what they have learned and the activities that take place. The children at Penketh South show a clear understanding for the importance of why we have PSHE lessons. We encourage you to have a look at the class pages for more detail about the PSHE lessons that are taking place in our classes.
